Claims that original statistics of the effect of poor air quality on our health have been widely underestimated are being alleged more and more, placing increasing pressure on the government to enforce vital changes to clean up our air and reduce the number of deaths caused by toxic emission inhalation.
With the UK government’s air quality plan set to be finalised at the end of July, the shift in the construction sector and the pressure to use greener, cleaner equipment on site, is rapidly gaining in strength. Diesel machines and equipment used in the construction industry account for a significant proportion of the overall particulate emissions, water pollution and noise pollution in the UK.
Hydrogen as a fuel used directly in a fuel cell to generate clean, virtually silent electrical power is increasingly being used instead of diesel and petrol to power construction equipment such a surveillance and task lighting on projects throughout the country. This rise in the use of hydrogen and fuel cell technology as a viable energy source comes as operatives gain confidence in recognising Hydrogen as a safe, silent, clean and affordable alternative when used responsibly. Hydrogen is a colourless, odourless, non-toxic gas which although, like petrol and diesel, highly flammable, is also fourteen times lighter than air, meaning it dissipates very rapidly therefore dramatically decreasing the risk of a fire or explosion.
Hydrogen is manufactured from a wide range of energy sources including conventional fossil fuels such as natural gas but, unlike diesel or petrol, it is also produced from the electrolysis of water which means it can be manufactured entirely from renewable energy such as wind or solar power.
The move towards hydrogen fuel cell powered lighting, monitoring and surveillance systems is evident in the capital with hydrogen powered equipment popping up on construction and rail projects in and around the city.
